Take a look at Pathways to the Professions. This programme is run by Edinburgh University and provides advice and guidance to state school students in Edinburgh interested in applying for Medicine, Law, Veterinary Medicine or Architecture.
Through nature to eternity
Today is being celebrated as the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare — the playwright loved by all school students forced to read out parts from his plays in english classes in front of their friends!
Despite that reputation as being boring, he did manage to invent more imaginative deaths that George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones…
…and, according to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, he created around one-tenth of all the most quotable phrases English. In Hamlet he even managed two in a single sentence…

Maths in space
In March year NASA scientists were asked how many decimals of the mathematical constant pi (π) they use when making calculations.
The answer is — fewer that you would think. Even with a spacecraft that’s 12.5 billion miles away!
Nuffield Research Placements
Another opportunity for students interested in the sciences for a summer placement. This one is with Nuffield Research Placements that give students the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians for 4 – 6 weeks over the summer holidays.
Applicants need to be in the first year of post-16 studies and studying one or more A-levels (or equivalent) in maths, science, engineering or a technology-related subjects. Students also need to have have five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade B or above, including Maths, English and a science.
Nuffield offer weekly bursaries to students who meet one of their criteria for support. They are particularly keen to encourage students with no family history of Higher Education, or who have not had the opportunity to participate in an enrichment activity of this nature before, to apply.
